For years we have all known the importance of giving fish oil to our pets on a regular basis.  It may indeed be the most important supplement that we can give no matter what our animals eat.  Dogs and cats that are fed kibble benefit even more from the outside supplementation of fish oil due to the nature of what they are actually ingesting and the fact that it is relatively depleted nutritionally from the processing that it is subjected to.  Some commercial diets, raw and non-raw, claim to add fish oil of some sort to their recipe.  While they do indeed add it, fish oil is such a volatile substance that it begins to break down as soon as it is exposed to light, air and heat.  It is in the food, but your dog is not deriving much, if any, benefit from it.  Adding it from an outside source at the time of feeding is still absolutely necessary.

While fish oil tends to come from any cold water fish such as tuna, mackerel, salmon, Pollock, cod or herring (to name a few), they are not all created equal.  Salmon oil is generally considered the Cadillac of fish oils, but can be somewhat cost prohibitive for some.  Thankfully, a new product manufactured by the good people at Grizzly Pet Products, is helping to solve that problem with fantastic results.

Fans of Grizzly Salmon Oil may have a hard time deciding whether or not to give Pollock Oil a try.  While salmon oil IS superior, a better option is a mixture of the two – a rotation of fish oil.  As with feeding different protein sources so that your dog can derive different benefits from different sources, giving different, but comparable, types of fish oil can offer the same type of benefit.  Rotating the two can also be a financial savings for many.  With supplies of wild Alaskan Salmon experiencing difficulties this year, Grizzly has been forced to raise the price on all salmon products.  Pollock Oil, while incredibly similar to Salmon Oil, is approximately 20%-25% cheaper.  It comes in the same handy pump bottles and in the same basic sizes.  By choosing to rotate between the Grizzly Salmon Oil and the Grizzly Pollock Oil, you will not only save a few dollars, but it will enable you to make sure that your pet is getting optimal supplementation of Omega 3’s from two different, but outstanding, wild fish.
