At the Edgerton household we have just spent the last two days delivering greyhound puppies. Our five year old Moonshella had eleven healthy beautiful pups after laboring for 36 hours.

Moon has been raw feed since she came to us at three months old and is a remarkably healthy. The father of the litter has also been fed raw since birth.

At 6:30 on 11/29/09, the first shiny wet black brindle pup arrived.

Moon started to labor on Sunday afternoon and after 18 hours had delivered 8 pups.  A trip to the vet for an x-ray showed that there were four more puppies yet to be born. One of those was born on the way home and Moon had one on Monday evening at about six.  She was pretty much worn out and by midnight had not even started contractions again so we gave her one dose of Oxytocin and after two and a half hours of contractions (poor baby), she produced one big stillborn pup. Once that pup was out of the way, the last puppy popped out and she was done and sound asleep at three-thirty.

Overall, Moon had eleven puppies, four girls and seven boys, in just two colors (greyhounds can be many different colors). Three of her puppies are a lovely gray brindle (two boys and a girl) and the rest are a deep dark black brindle with very slight red flecks.

While she was in labor, we gave Moonshella Fastrack to keep her digestive track working well. See how Fastrack works in this article. We also fed her Green Tripe because she likes it and she didn’t want to eat anything but we wanted her to keep her strength up.  She did great; she was tired in the end but who wouldn’t be!

Not as tired on Tuesday morning, Moonshella nurses her pups in shifts.

For the puppies, we gave them Fastrack right away to help them develop healthy bacteria quickly and they nursed and nursed from Moonshella’s abundant milk supply almost from their first breath.

Awww ... how cute is that!

Mom and pups are doing great today. We’ll give you some updates along the way and tomorrow I let you in on what Moon will be eating to feed this hungry hoard. Just a hint – it’s alot and it’s Raw!
